Why it worked

For local businesses, speed and proximity win. Owning local search and making it one tap to call or message turned inconsistent enquiries into a reliable flow of leads.

Behind the approach

Local, service-based businesses convert on speed and proximity more than brand messaging, so the strategy prioritised fast-loading local landing pages and Google Ads campaigns tightly targeted by service area, rather than broad regional or national campaigns that would have wasted spend on out-of-area clicks.

How do local customers find and choose a service business in 2026?

Google states that local results are mainly based on relevance, distance and prominence. Prominence depends in part on how many websites link to a business and how many reviews it has, and Google adds that there is no way to request or pay for a better local ranking. It also says businesses with complete and accurate information are more likely to appear, and that replying to reviews helps a business stand out.

Distance is the one factor a business cannot change, so relevance and prominence do the work. In our view, relevance comes from accurate categories and services and a website that clearly says what you do and where, while prominence comes from reviews and links. Businesses covering several areas often gain from a distinct page for each, which also gives paid campaigns a matching landing page.

Measure actions, not views

Google's Business Profile Performance API shows which customer actions are reported. The call metric counts button taps rather than completed calls, so treat it as intent.

MetricWhat Google counts
CALL_CLICKSTimes the profile's call button was clicked
BUSINESS_DIRECTION_REQUESTSRequests for directions to the business
WEBSITE_CLICKSClicks on the profile's website link
BUSINESS_BOOKINGSReservations made through Reserve with Google
Impressions (Search and Maps, desktop and mobile)Views of the profile, with repeat views by one user in a day counted once

What paid local search costs

LocaliQ's 2026 benchmarks, weighted towards US campaigns, show the Home & Home Improvement category at $8.33 per click, an 8.05% conversion rate and a $90.92 cost per lead, against an all-industry average cost per lead of $66.69. Expensive clicks make out-of-area traffic costly, so location settings matter. Google Ads offers two options: the default and recommended Presence or interest, or Presence only, which excludes people who merely show interest in a location.

Make contact one tap, and keep the page fast

Call assets add a phone number to ads so people can tap to call your business directly; call reporting, available on the Search Network, lets you count those calls as conversions. For the landing page, Google's guidance sets good Core Web Vitals at LCP within 2.5 seconds, INP of 200 milliseconds or less and CLS of 0.1 or less, measured at the 75th percentile of page loads. On WhatsApp, non-template replies are free inside the 24-hour customer service window that opens when the customer messages you.

How can you apply this approach in your own business?

Local lead generation works when visibility, speed and contact options all line up. These steps cover each.

  1. Complete and verify your Business Profile Fill in the category, address or service area, accurate hours and special hours, and verify the listing. Google says complete, accurate profiles are more likely to appear. Pair this with local SEO on the website.
  2. Reply to every review Google notes that replying shows customers you value feedback and can help a business stand out. Set a weekly slot for it so it does not slip.
  3. Track calls, directions and website clicks monthly Record the three actions from your Performance report and compare them with the enquiries you actually logged. Call clicks are taps, so reconcile them with your call log.
  4. Set the service area deliberately Choose postcodes or a radius that match where you can work, then decide between Presence only and Presence or interest using your own conversion split, not a rule of thumb.
  5. Add call assets and turn on call reporting Make the phone number tappable in ads and count calls as conversions, so budget follows the campaigns that produce calls rather than clicks. Our paid advertising management page explains how we approach it.
  6. Test the page on a phone Check LCP, INP and CLS on mobile, with a visible call button and WhatsApp link above the fold. Fix the slowest page type first, then rerun the test.

On one Singapore B2B Search account (measured August 2026, last 30 days), "area of interest" traffic produced 22 conversions from 147 clicks, against 4 conversions from 69 clicks for "presence" traffic. Switching to presence-only would have removed roughly 85% of that account's conversions. The interest visitors were mostly Singapore searchers typing "singapore" in the query or browsing from corporate or VPN networks Google could not geolocate. A local trade may differ, so measure the split before changing it.

Looking ahead

With lead volume growing and cost per lead falling, both businesses now have a repeatable, affordable acquisition channel they can scale up or down based on capacity, rather than relying on inconsistent referral-based demand. The local-first landing page structure built here is also being used as the template for any new service areas either business expands into.

Frequently asked questions

Should a local service business use Presence only targeting?

Not automatically. Google's default and recommended setting is Presence or interest, and Presence only excludes people who show interest in your area. Pull your location report, compare conversions and cost for each group, and change the setting only if the data supports it.

What is a reasonable cost per lead for local services?

It depends on your market and job value. LocaliQ's US data puts Home & Home Improvement at $90.92 per lead and all industries at $66.69. Use them as context, then work backwards from your average job margin and close rate to find what you can afford.

Do I still need a website if I have a Business Profile?

Yes. The profile reports website clicks as one of its customer actions, per Google's metrics, and Google Ads campaigns send traffic to a landing page. A fast page with a clear call button, built with conversion rate optimisation in mind, converts that interest into an enquiry.

Is WhatsApp worth adding for a local business?

Usually, because customers can message with one tap. Under WhatsApp's pricing rules, free-form replies are free inside the 24-hour window that opens when the customer writes, while template messages are charged per delivery. Our guide to WhatsApp CRM software compares options.
